by William Donovan
for About.com

Definition: A community development credit union specializes in serving populations unable to access banks or mainstream credit unions. They provide loans to such borrowers as low-income wage earners or recent immigrants. Community development credit unions are non-profit, cooperatively owned and federally regulated financial institutions. Socially responsible investors often favor them as a way to make a direct investment in neglected neighborhoods.
